MOUNTAIN MAN PRODUCTION TO WRAP UP
Year-Long Documentary Production Class Ends With Student Film Showcase

April 18, 2011

Fayetteville, Ark. – Production of the student film Mountain Man is nearing the end, as the year-long project will culminate with the showing of a fine cut in a private student film showcase set for April 25.

Mountain Man tells the story of a man who grew up in the middle of nowhere, took up a military lifestyle, enjoys shooting guns, is a staunch defender of the American way, and was born in Thailand.

Suphan Gingsumrong, the protagonist in the film, shows that both jungle life and civilization carry with them rewards and plenty of challenges, and with the Great Recession and personal turmoil weighing him down, he is using his survival instincts now more than ever.

Suphan (pronounced SOO-pahn) is the owner of Thep Thai restaurant in south Fayetteville, and in the film he is shown coexisting with true Arkansans and people of all other cultures as though race were no barrier.

"He was an amazing film subject and I hope he inspires viewers as much as he inspired us," said Jose Lopez, who served as producer and co-writer of the film. "When he smiles, it's genuine, and I'm amazed how his sense of humor remains intact despite all the problems he's encountered all his life."

Lopez made the film with fellow University of Arkansas students Yen Nguyen and Nazli Ozkan, and he says their international viewpoints (the filmmakers are from Mexico, Vietnam and Turkey) helped shaped the film in a unique way.

Mountain Man is one of three products of this year's Documentary Production class taught by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Larry Foley and USC and Harvard alum Carmen Coustaut.

The world premiere of
Mountain Man and the two other films will be in October, with the exact date to be announced, at the Arkansas Union Theatre.

The April showcase will be private, but the October world premiere will be free and open to the public.
